What makes a great bed, exactly? Like most fine things in life, the answer is elusive, difficult to pin down, open to a number of tantalising possibilities. Here at Chic Retreats, we know a thing or two about getting a great night’s sleep, wherever you are in the world. Whether you’re after sumptuous four-posters, fantastic views, or quirky details, these are some of our favourite hotel beds, an eclectic range that shows that greatness and comfort comes in many shapes and sizes.
We’re just back from our stay (February 2019) at luxury London hotel 11 Cadogan Gardens. Hidden away just behind John Lewis in Sloane Square, 11 Cadogan Gardens is one of the best-positioned boutique hotels in London. If the discreet sign wasn’t there you wouldn’t even know it was a hotel. Spread across a couple of buildings this Chic Retreat has the atmosphere of a private club with exceptional and very friendly service. We stayed in room 10, a Deluxe King Room and whilst the en-suite marble bathroom is tiny, it’s perfect and beautiful. The bed is possibly the most comfortable bed we have slept in, massive, it’s made up with crisp bed linen and soft down pillows. We love that the bed linen is changed on a daily basis and unlike many hotels, 11 Cadogan Gardens is really generous with its complimentary water. If you’re a foodie then you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven with the breakfast menu – the French Toast is to die for and the scrambled eggs are some of the best you’ll find in London.
There’s nothing straightforward about the quirky, characterful Portobello Hotel in London’s Notting Hill, least of all the beds. Nestled beneath a canopy of flowing white curtains, the circular bed is as comfortable as it is quirky, and fits in well with the lavishly appointed décor, including a spacious bathtub, perfect for a luxurious soak, although it’s up to you if you choose to fill it with champagne, as certain famous guests at The Portobello have been known to do, on occasion. We visited and stayed in 2018 and had the pleasure of a massive four poster bed, just as impossible to climb into as to get out of, wonderful for a romantic stay!
We love the occasional hidden surprise in the bedroom, and the Cabriolet Suite at L’Albereta, Northern Italy, has a truly extraordinary secret. At the push of a button, the roof above the wide four-poster bed glides open to reveal the sky above, a uniquely romantic experience made even more special by a sparkling glass of local Franciacorta. Ensconced in the beautiful landscape of Northern Italy, this elegant 19th-century villa has a world-class spa, making for a romantic getaway amongst verdant vineyards and the crystal waters of Lake Iseo.
Nothing gets in the way of a good night’s sleep more than feeling cramped, but luckily this won’t ever be an issue at Lloyd’s Hotel & Cultural Embassy. Their eclectically designed ‘Five-Star Rooms’ have a number of quirky, fun features, with one of them featuring a gigantic, 7-person bed- perfect for a group of (very close) friends, or a couple who really value their personal space. This design hotel in Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands has a characterful history, and now hosts exhibitions, installations and events in the bohemian-chic surroundings of its 1920s building.
Wrought-iron beds, sumptuous wool mattresses, and traditionally-patterned blankets spun on a 19th-century loom: the beds at Sextantio Albergo Diffuso have been designed in keeping with the extraordinary restored medieval décor of the hotel. Bedrooms have roughly plastered walls and tenebrous exposed beams, and are lit by hand-crafted candles and crackling fireplaces. Situated in the ancient hilltop village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, there’s plenty to do during your stay at this atmospheric hotel, whether hiking or truffle hunting in the surrounding countryside, or feasting on medieval delicacies at the hotel’s kitchen, where dishes are served on handcrafted ceramics.
Situated in the otherworldly, semi-desert landscape of Navarra, northeastern Spain, Hotel Aire de Bardenas offers guests the unforgettable opportunity to sleep beneath a canopy of stars in their uniquely-designed Bubble Rooms. Snuggled within your cosy double bed, you’re separated from the glittering expanse of the universe only by the transparent ceiling of your space-age accommodation. During the day, relax in your personal bubble, or splash into the pool under the wide, blue Spanish sky. There’s nothing quite like it in the world.
Whoever said you couldn’t lie in bed all day? While the bedrooms at The Balé are luxurious, it’s the sumptuous day beds that hold a particular place in our hearts. With crisp, cool linen, shaded by sleek contemporary pavilions, these spacious, comfortable and private bengongs give you the perfect excuse to spend the day reclining with a good book and a refreshing cocktail- not that an excuse is ever needed, of course. For even more indulgence, The Balé has a fantastic spa offering a wide selection of wellness and holistic treatments, and its restaurant serves some of the best food in Bali. When we stayed in 2018 we had Reflexology, pure bliss, it had us floating on air for days!
Bed down in style at Hotel Panache, with comfortable, spacious beds set within a charming retro-chic Parisian décor. We love the little details, from the twisted metal headboards to the vintage light-switches and telephones beside the beds. Located in the 9th arrondissement, Hotel Panache is perfect for a stylish weekend getaway in the City of Love.
Lie back and let the sea breeze and gently breaking waves rock you to sleep in one of the swinging beds at Azulik. These spacious beds are suspended in beach-hut style rooms constructed out of natural materials, with fantastic views of the Caribbean. There’s no electricity here, and no phone reception, guaranteeing you a peaceful sleep without the distractions of modern life. Perched on the Tulum coastline, Azulik takes its cues from the pre-Columbian cultures of Central America. Set on a stunning beach, backed by lush jungle, Azulik is the ultimate secluded retreat.
At this kooky boutique in Bristol, you’ll have the chance to stay in British-made ‘Retro Rocket Trailers’. Clad in sleek chrome, and with plush white interiors playfully lit with LED strip-light, these certainly aren’t your run-of-the-mill bedrooms. Surprisingly spacious, the beds make for an attractive nest, perfect for snuggling down after exploring the trendy St Nicholas’ Market, just outside the hotel. Caravanning never looked so chic.
Whether you’re bedding down beneath the sweeping vista of the night sky or cosying up in the elegant surroundings of an Italian villa, we all know that a good night’s sleep begins with quality linen. Like Chic Retreats, Draper London knows that it’s the details that count, which is why all of their sheets are made by a network of European suppliers, using centuries-old techniques and luxurious 300-thread count cotton.
