Hotel Spotlight: The Samata

The Samata Boutique hotel Bali

This hidden gem is an oasis of loveliness as well as wellness. Against the backdrop of rice fields and with the sound of the nearby ocean waves, it’s easy to see why people come here year after year. With just 15 suites it’s intimate and the service provided by the fabulous GM Lisa and her family of Lifestyle Retreats staff is both extremely knowledgeable and exceptional. Many guests will recognise Lisa from The Bale as she was there from when it opened before moving on to work in other Lifestyle Retreats properties. In fact Lisa is more of a hostess, with her big personality and smile she’ll anticipate your every need.

The 3-bedroom villa is the jewel in The Samata’s crown and it’s massive! The rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, are large, 2 with paddy field and ocean views and the third is nestled next to the large private pool. If you’re a spa junkie and after a daily treatment book the Spa Suite – not only do you benefit from a complementary treatment each day, you have your own treatment room in your suite, allowing you to snooze away on the massage bed without the need to get up.

The Samata is one of only a few hotels in Bali to focus on health and fitness for the body and mind. Whether you’re after mild exercise, dawn yoga, full-on cardio workouts, kick-boxing, weight training or playing a set or two of the tennis court, it delivers. In fact the gym is massive and includes a boxing ring. Balinese Bagus is master of most of the above as well as TRX and is also an expert at reading palms and numerology. Boot camps are held here throughout the year and to complement the fitness there’s a healthy menu, gluten-free menu and juice menu (we loved the beetroot Booster) at the restaurant Zenzo. Foodies, don’t be put off as this Chic Retreat isn’t only about health and fitness. There’s a great comfort menu and the setting at The Samata is so seductive even if you aren’t into fitness, it’s a magical place to come and experience for a few days as a couple or with the family.

At least a 2 night stay is needed at The Samata, to soak up the beautiful pools and surroundings. Harvesting takes place between March and April so expect a little smoke from the harvest burning.
